BE A PART OF WELCOMING OUR NEW COUGS!

Week of Welcome (WOW) is a week-long event that combines academic, educational, developmental, and social programming to provide a solid foundation for new and returning students. The programming focuses on helping students meet basic needs on campus; making connections with fellow students, faculty, and staff; preparing for the academic year; establishing their social identity; and transitioning into life as a WSU student.

Any questions about the Week of Welcome schedule can be sent to wsu.wow@wsu.edu.

Hosting a WOW Event

We host WOW events in Coug Presence, which makes it easier for us to advertise and share your events with students. Please remember that all submitted events should not conflict with WOW signature events.

We want to promote WOW events to students during New Coug Orientation all summer. The priority deadline for event submissions is June 10. Please let us know if you have any questions by emailing wsu.wow@wsu.edu.

Guiding Principles for Week of Welcome Activities – Week of Welcome Events should:

  • Have a student learning outcome (as a student, why should I go and what will I gain)
    • Introduce tradition
    • Orient/familiarization to resources/services
    • Establish desirable social situations
    • Ease transition
    • Connect with Pullman
    • Make social/peer connections
  • Be planned, communicated, and promoted well in advance
    • Dates/times/location/one sentence summary
    • Let them know HOW they will be participating to ease anxiety
    • Should be planned to take place during gaps around signature events
    • Have a plan to bring students to the event and once there, be easy to navigate
    • Plan for all forms of participation
    • Students should feel welcome/seen/included
    • Meeting students where they are at: Social Media platforms.
  • Welcome, Build, and Represent the WSU community
    • By interest
    • By academic field
    • By identity
    • By housing
  • Encourage continued participation in events after WoW
    • Leave them with a sense of excitement
    • Informing where they can find ongoing, similar events or community engagement opportunities
  • Have measurable outcomes of success (beyond attendance)
    • Increased use of resource post-WOW
